College is a new and different experience for me. I\’m away from home, so I have many things to adjust to, such as being on my own and meeting many different types of people. There are a lot of things that I like about college that I would like to describe for you.

First of all, living at college gives me a sense of responsibility and of being on my own. My parents aren\’t around to say, \”No, you\’re not going out tonight,\” or \”Did you finish your homework?\” Everything I do has to be my decision, and that makes me responsible for my own life. During the second week I was at college, I had to go out and look for a bank where I could open an account. And when I got to the bank, I had to decide whether to have a checking or savings account and whether or not to get a credit card. Decisions! Decisions!

Friendly people is another thing I like about college. On the first day I came to Mary mount University here in Virginia from New York, I was a bit confused about where I was going. My mother and I drove in. We did not know the building we were supposed to go to, but the guard was very nice. With a smile, he told us what building we were looking for and where we could park our car. My room was on the first floor of New Gerard, and I knew I had to go through some glass doors, but my mother and I didn\’t know which ones. Some students saw me and asked, \”Are you a new student?\” When they found out I was looking for New Gerard, one said, \”Oh, just follow us; that\’s where we\’re going.\” Even now I feel comfortable in the dorm (学生宿舍)because there are friendly people around to talk with.

I do like a lot of things about college, but that doesn\’t mean I don\’t think about things at home. Although I like college, I can still get homesick. New York is a very good place, too! And sometimes I miss it!

1.The text is perhaps written by _________.

A.a new student

B.a new teacher

C.a foreign reporter

D.a foreign visitor

2.What does \”gives me a sense of responsibility\” in the first sentence of Paragraph 2 mean?It means it makes me feel _________.

Global warming is causing more than 300,000 deaths and about $125 billion in economic losses each year, according to a report by the Global Humanitarian Forum, an organization led by Annan, the former United Nations secretary general.

The report, to be released Friday, analyzed data and existing studies of health, disaster, population and economic trends. It found that human-influenced climate change was raising the global death rates from illnesses including malnutrition (营养不良) and heat-related health problems.

But even before its release, the report drew criticism from some experts on climate and risk, who questioned its methods and conclusions.

Along with the deaths, the report said that the lives of 325 million people, primarily in poor countries, were being seriously affected by climate change. It projected that the number would double by 2030.

Roger Pielke Jr.a political scientist at the University of Colorado, Boulder, who studies disaster trends, said the Forum’s report was “a methodological embarrassment” because there was no way to distinguish deaths or economic losses related to human-driven global warming amid the much larger losses resulting from the growth in populations and economic development in vulnerable (易受伤害的) regions. Dr. Pielke said that “climate change is an important problem requiring our utmost attention.” But the report, he said, “will harm the cause for action on both climate change and disasters because it is so deeply flawed (有瑕疵的).”

However, Soren Andreasen, a social scientist at Dalberg Global Development Partners who supervised the writing of the report, defended it, saying that it was clear that the numbers were rough estimates. He said the report was aimed at world leaders, who will meet in Copenhagen in December to negotiate a new international climate treaty.

In a press release describing the report, Mr. Annan stressed the need for the negotiations to focus on increasing the flow of money from rich to poor regions to help reduce their vulnerability to climate hazards while still curbing the emissions of the heat-trapping gases. More than 90% of the human and economic losses from climate change are occurring in poor countries, according to the report.

1.What is the finding of the Global Humanitarian Forum?

A.Global temperatures affect the rate of economic development.

B.Rates of death from illnesses have risen due to global warming.

C.Malnutrition has caused serious health problems in poor countries.

D.Economic trends have to do with population and natural disasters.

2. What do we learn about the Forum’s report from the passage?

A.It was challenged by some climate and risk experts.

B.It aroused a lot of interest in the scientific circles.

C.It was warmly received by environmentalists.

D.It caused a big stir in developing countries.

3. What does Dr. Pielke say about the Forum’s report?

A.Its statistics look embarrassing.

B.It is invalid in terms of methodology.

C.It deserves our closest attention.

D.Its conclusion is purposely exaggerated.

4. What is Soren Andreasen’s view of the report?

A.Its conclusions are based on carefully collected data.

B.It is vulnerable to criticism if the statistics are closely examined.

C.It will give rise to heated discussions at the Copenhagen conference.

D.Its rough estimates are meant to draw the attention of world leaders.

5.What does Kofi Annan say should be the focus of the Copenhagen conference?

A.How rich and poor regions can share responsibility in curbing global warming.

B.How human and economic losses from climate change can be reduced.

C.How emissions of heat-trapping gases can be reduced on a global scale.

D.How rich countries can better help poor regions reduce climate hazards.

Reaching new peaks of popularity in North America is Iceberg Water, which is harvested from icebergs off the coast of Newfoundland, Canada.

Arthur von Wiesenberger, who carries the title Water Master, is one of the few water critics in North America. As a boy, he spent time in the larger cities of Italy, France and Switzerland, where bottled water is consumed daily. Even then, he kept a water journal, noting the brands he liked best. “My dog could tell the difference between bottled and tap water,” He says.

But is plain tap water all that bad? Not at all. In fact, New York’s municipal water for more than a century was called the champagne of tap water and until recently considered among the best in the world in terms of both taste and purity. Similarly, a magazine in England found that tap water from the Thames River tasted better than several leading brands of bottled water that were 400 times more expensive.

Nevertheless, soft-drink companies view bottled water as the next battle-ground for market share―this despite the fact that over 25 percent of bottled water comes from tap water: PepsiCo’s Aquafina and Coca-Cola’s Dasani are both purified tap water rather than spring water.

As diners thirst for leading brands, bottlers and restaurateurs salivate (垂涎) over the profits. A restaurant’s typical mark-up on wine is 100 to 150 percent, whereas on bottled water it’s often 300 to 500 percent. But since water is much cheaper than wine, and many of the fancier brands aren’t available in stores, most diners don’t notice or care.

As a result, some restaurants are turning up the pressure to sell bottled water. According to an article in The Street Journal, some of the more shameless tactics include placing attractive bottles on the table for a visual sell, listing brands on the menu without prices, and pouring bottled water without even asking the diners if they want it.

Regardless of how it’s sold, the popularity of bottled water taps into our desire for better health, our wish to appear cultivated, and even a longing for lost purity.

1. What do we know about Iceberg Water from the passage?

A.It is a kind of iced water.

B.It is just plain tap water.

C.It is a kind of bottled water.

D.It is a kind of mineral water.

2. By saying “My dog could tell the difference between bottled and tap water (Line 3 Para2),” Von Wiesenberger wants to convey the message that .

A.plain tap water is certainly unfit for drinking

B.bottled water is clearly superior to tap water

C.bottled water often appeals more to dogs taste

D.dogs can usually detect a fine difference in taste

3. The fancier brands (Line 3 Para 5) refers to .

A.tap water from the Thames River

B.famous wines not sold in ordinary stores

C.Pepsi Co’s Aquafina and Coca-Cola’s Dasani

D.expensive bottled water with impressive names

4. Why are some restaurants turning up the pressure to sell bottled water?

A.Bottled water brings in huge profits.

B.Competition from the wine industry is intense.

C.Most diners find bottled water affordable.

D.Bottled water satisfied diners’ desire to fashionable.

5. According to passage, why is bottled water so popular?

A.It is much cheaper than wine.

B.It is considered healthier.

C.It appeals to more cultivated people.

D.It is more widely promoted in the market.

【解析】A.

When I was studying English at a training center in Washington D.C. in 1998, I shared a house with two young Americans, Jim, and Steve. Jim was studying French and Steve Chinese, both at the Foreign Service Institute. We shared many things in common, but we also thought and acted quite differently. Steve was interested in speaking Chinese. He always tried every opportunity to talk with me with his very English-like pronunciation. I was often touched with his diligence. However, I wanted to practice English with him, too. So we often speak at the same time in the other’s mother tongue. Jim was fresh from college and the youngest of the three. He was going out all the time. The only time we met was at breakfast. There was a small round table in our kitchen, where we sat around to enjoy our food. Steve had Chinese fast food such as dumplings or noodles, and I ate bread and boiled eggs. But Jim often just drank a cup of tea because he had nothing in his fridge. He was too busy dating pretty French girls to do any shopping. I often offered him some of my food. But Steve told me in his poor Chinese that I didn’t need to do that. He said that it was Jim’s own fault and that it served him right. Although he was learning Chinese, he still held his American sense of value.

Two years later, I returned to China. The three of us still keep in touch. Jim now works in a travel agency in Paris. He got married to one of the pretty girls. Life really should be one long journey of joy for children who are born with a world of wealth at their tiny feet. But experts on psychological research now believe that silver spoons can leave a bitter taste. If suicide statistics are a sign of happiness, then the rich are a miserable lot. Figures show that it is the rich who most often do away with themselves.

Dr. Robert Coles, an internationally famous doctor, is the world’s top expert on the influence of money on children. He has written a well-received book on the subject, The Privileged Ones, and his research shows that too much money in the family can cause as many problems as too little. “Obviously there are certain advantages to being rich,” says the 53-year-old doctor, “such as better health, education and future work expectation. But most important is the quality of family life. Money can’t buy love.”

It can buy a lot of other things, though, and that’s where the trouble starts. Rich kids have so much to choose from that they often become confused. Their parents’ over favoring can make them spoiled. They tend to travel more than other children, from home to home and country to country, which often makes them feel restless.

“But privileged children do have a better sense of their positions in the world,” adds Mr. Coles, “and they are more self-assured.”

Today’s rich parents perhaps have realized that their riches can be more of a burden than a favor to their children. So their priority is to ensure that their families are as rich in love as they are in money.

Charlene,a 16-year-old student at a high school, found herself faced with a maths test to which she knew none of the answers. Rather than fail, she took the test out with her and filled in the answers with the help of her friends. During a break, she got back into the classroom without being seen, crumpled(揉,皱) the test with her shoe, and left it lying on the floor. The teacher thought it had been dropped when the tests were recollected, she corrected it, and Charlene received a B.

Cheating is, of course, nothing new. But today, educators are finding that cheating on the part of students has become more frequent than in the past. Whether it is copying a friend’s homework, using a prepared sheet on an exam, stealing advance copies of a final, writing down rules in one’s hand, or paying someone else to write a term paper, cheating appears to have gained acceptance among a growing number of students between 13 and 19.

In a 1978 study of cheating at 22 high schools in Georgia, it was found that cheating was common among good and poor students alike——although both boys and girls said they thought boys cheated more.

Why is student on the rise? No one really knows. Some blame cheating on a general loss of good values among today’s youth. They point to facts showing increased damage of public things and school stealing and think that reports, such as Watergate(水门事件), have a disappointed youth about the honesty of people in higher position.

Others think that today’s youth are far more practical than their forefathers(先辈). In the late sixties and early seventies, students were failed with imaginations about changing the world, but today’s students feel great stress to succeed.

1. According to Paragraph 1, Charlene took the test out because .

A. her friends could answer none of the problems.

B. she tore the test paper to pieces.

C. she stepped her shoes on the test paper.

D.she didn’t want to fail in the maths test.

2. Charlene passed the test because .

A. she answered all the questions by herself.

B. she did the test by cheating.

C. she persuaded her teacher to give her a B.

D. she returned to the classroom to redo the test.

3. Which of the following is not an example to show that cheating is becoming more and more common?

A .student pays another for doing a test paper.

B. student writes down something to be tested before an exam.

C. student gets well prepared in his studies before an exam.

D. student gets homework from his classmate and then copies it.

4. The 1978 study of cheating in Georgia shows that .

A. only students in the 24 high schools cheated in examinations.

B. both good and poor students cheated in examinations

C. more girls cheated in examinations than boys did.

D. boys liked cheating while girls didn’t like it.

5.One of the facts for the rise of cheating is that .

A. more and more public things are damaged

B. good values disappoint students

C. more and more students begin to steal

D. honest people are in higher positions.

Among the most popular books being written today are those which are usually classified as science fiction(科幻小说).Hundreds of titles are published every year and are read by all kinds of people. Furthermore, some of the most successful films of recent years have been based on science fiction stories.

It is often thought that science fiction is a fairly new development in literature, but its ancestors (原型)can be found in books written hundreds of years ago. These books are often concerned with the presentation of some forms of ideal society, a theme which is still often found in modern stories.

Most of classics of science fiction, however, have been written within the last one hundred years. Books by writers such as Jules Verne and H. G Wells, to mention just two well-known authors, have been translated into many languages.

Modern science fiction writers don\’t write shout men from Mars or space adventure stories. They are more interested in predicting the results of technical developments on society and the human mind; or in imagining future worlds which are a reflection(反映)of the world which we live in now. Because of this their writing has obvious political undertones(含意).

In an age where science fact frequently overtakes(超越)science fiction, the writers may find it difficult to keep ahead of scientific advances. Those who are sufficiently clear-sighted to see the way we are going, however, may provide a valuable lesson on how to deal with the problems which society will inevitably face as it tries to come to terms with a continually changing view of the world.

1. Which of the following statements is NOT true?

A.Science fiction is fairly new in literature.

B.Science fiction is rather popular with people today.
